Mary Ann is a Swing Dance Hall of Fame member. Learn to Dance loves to sponsor her workshops in Austin. The opportunity to study with her is an honor. She is one of the most important people in the Swing community. In 1997, she received a ``Dancers Choice Award" for ``Most Favorite Female Dancer." She has won every major Swing Event there is. She travels to Swing conventions throughout the US & is one of the most popular teachers there. Needless to say, we love having her visit us at Learn to Dance Austin. Mary Ann started dancing West Coast Swing in 1983. Featured dancer on a TV special called ``In The Swing" with Dean Collins as well known choreographer and dancer. He was her 1st dance coach & taught her to appreciate dancing to Big Band Music. Kenny Wetzel, a well-known dancer, choreographer, Emcee & DJ was her 2nd coach. From him, she learned the thrill of dancing East Coast Flying Lindy and St. Louis Shag. In 1983 & 1984 she won 1st place, Showcase Division in the US Open Swing Dance Championships. She appeared in the Finals on the TV Program ``Dance Fever." She also has appeared on TV programs (Eye on LA, Two on the Town & Hard Copy) & commercials ( Mountain Dew, Burger King and Bud Light.) !990, was inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame for the ``Best Female Swing Dancer." Throughout the `80's she has won major events in the ``Invitational" & ``Championships" categories held all over the US including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Phoenix, San Francisco, Chicago and Atlanta. She has passed the ``Registered Exam" for the Golden State Dancers Teachers Assoc. and is involved with continuing education with the GSDTA. She has also received a ``Technical Dance Award" from the GSDTA. She has received a Feather Award for 3 consecutive years for ``Most Outstanding Female Swing Dancer in the Nation." Mary Ann is an adjudicator of National Competitions & presently teaches workshops throughout the US In Nov. `97, she received a ``Dancers Choice Award" for ``Most Favorite Female Dancer" which was given to her by her peers. Last time she visited we had 12 Swing workshops. 8 of the workshops were West Coast Swing that stressed technique (centering, connection, pulsing), music interpretation (matching your moves to the music), syncopations, "Showcasing" your moves, plus LOTS of new steps. The other four were focused on Flying Lindy , Swingline, and Shim Sham. |
